Authentic Horizons

At Authentic Horizons, we prioritize collaboration and inclusivity, we have two arms of our business, both held together by the common thread of a strong desire to help others. Whether it be guiding an individual down a career or educational pathway, or consulting with a business, non-profit, or government organization to build custom training around diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice, we are here to help.

Jay de Montarnal (they/them)

I am dedicated to empowering young people aged 15-30 to navigate their career and education paths with confidence and purpose. With over two decades of experience, I bring a wealth of expertise in career and education consulting. I have worked with thousands of young people to navigate career and education decisions in my 10+ years working in post-secondary institutions. I have also worked extensively with equity-deserving (aka "at-risk") youth surrounding education and employment challenges including the systemic barriers that must be navigated. As a queer, Métis person, I know all too well the systemic challenges within our education and employment systems.

In additon to being passionate about working with youth, I hold an interest in course and curriculum development and workshop facilitation. I am certified in online course development through Grande Prairie Regional College (now Northwestern Polytech). I enjoy bringing customized training solutions to organizations through an anti-oppression, trauma informed lens. I have recently worked on an Anti-Racism training for grade 8 classrooms as well as an Active Witness training for the same audience.

I hold a Master of Arts degree alongside numerous trainings including crisis intervention, ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Training), Indigenous Canada, Difficult Conversations, and Leadership through Facilitation. I am also a certified administrator of the Strong Interest Inventory assessment and as a Certified Coach Practitioner. Decolonization and accessibility are central to my work with youth and I am deeply committed to a participant-led approach. I leverage my experience and expertise to provide tailored guidance that resonates with people from diverse backgrounds and identities.

When I am not working, you can find me spending time with my family, strengthening my relationship to the land, educating myself about reconciliation work, scrolling Tik Tok, and uplifting my community.

Sharie Valentine (she/her)

Bringing nearly three decades of experience working closely with youth, including at-risk and marginalized populations, I am deeply committed to supporting young people in their journey towards education and employment. Armed with a Bachelor of Management with a major in Human Resources and Labour Relations, and currently pursuing my Masters in Psychology, I have been a driving force in establishing mental health hubs across rural Alberta, ensuring vital support reaches underserved youth. My approach is firmly rooted in trauma-informed, decolonized principles, fostering safe and accountable spaces where every young person feels acknowledged and valued.

Beyond my academic qualifications, I have acquired a range of credentials including Trauma Informed Care, Sexual assaut disclosure training, Indigenous Canada certificate, Conflict Resoultion, Safer Spaces training, Bystander training, ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention training), VTRA (Violent threat risk assesment), and more. With a focus on continuous learning and a belief in the transformative power of gentle support, I'm here to help youth build confidence, find fulfillment, and thrive in a world that too often overlooks their potential.

I have also raised two teens of my own so I totally get the challenges of parenting/caregiving for a young person in this ever changing world. I offer judgment free space to everyone I work with.
